Finally, a soap star that speaks their mind!!!!

Erika Slezak recently gave an interview which is very candided and honest. She talks about how the scenes with Starr and Cole were too much and how Dena Hagley can't write. To read the interview http://erikaslezak.com/

I won, I finally won Do you take Visa, MasterCard, American Express?

In a really tacky and belt tightening measure, the Daytime Emmies are now starting to give out one free Emmy. The ones who win multiple (writing, costume, etc.) will have to cough up $350 for it. More on it at the TV Guide website.http://community.tvguide.com/thread.jspa?threadID=800011467

Is Brian Frons smoking the crack pipe?

A recent interview with Brian Frons about ABC daytime. http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/CA6425815.html

Anne Becker: Did anything surprise you about the nominations?
If I had a disappointment it would be that General Hospital did not get a nod for best show and it’s interesting because the writing was nominated, Tony Geary, Genie Francis and Julie Berman were featured in the November episode the show submitted for best show and were all recognized and so was the director somehow the show wasn’t. It’s just one of those things were it’s a headscratcher, but you can’t get too upset about these things.
I’m very pleased particularly for One Life to Live and The View. It’s One Life to Live’s first Best Show nomination since Frank Valentini took over in early 2003. And I’m glad the Academy recognized that. Rosie has added an enormous bolt of energy and creativity to The View and I’m glad to see that was appreciated. I’m hoping the tenth time is the charm.

-Frons is surprised that General Hospital wasn't nominated for best show? Gees I wonder why that is? First there is the mob violence that makes the sopranos look like the boy scouts, second there are centered around the same characters that are not even likable. The episodes in which Genie Francis briefly came back were one of the best shows General Hospital had all year. That doesn't mean the show should be nominated for Best show, It should be for a whole year of good shows not just for sweeps.

Anne Becker: Why did you have such a good sweeps?
The ratings speak for themselves. We had four of top five shows in the sweep. The View grew because of Rosie’s arrival to the program. General Hospital took a very unique creative approach and the audience recognized that. They showed a standoff between police and a band of criminals who had taken over the Metro Court Hotel. They showed the front of the hotel blowing out and then flashed back 16 hours over 16 episodes to show how that happened and how the characters had gotten to that point and followed the aftermath and the audience went, ‘wow, we have never seen that before.’ GH led in every major female demographic from teens, 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54 women. Since the start of people meters, that’s the first time General Hospital has ever done that and the second time I think it’s ever been done that at all. So, it’s nice to see that when somebody takes a chance, the audience rewards them for it.

-"A very unique creative approach and the audience recognized that." If that unique creative approach pertains to hostages, criminals, explosions and coping "24" then GH is unique indeed! Look at the message boards from any soap website and see the majority of the fans are not happy about the way General Hospital is going. Does Frons really think that explosions and criminals taking hostages makes good TV? Don't forget the sadistic way that Alan Quartermine(Straut Damon) suffers a heart attack for a week before dying. That's not a unique creative approach, its just disgraceful.

Anne Becker: All My Children’s head writer was recently fired reportedly because of crazy stunts she wrote – did the show go too far?
Children took a lot of risks in the last couple of years. At a time when the country was debating whether gays should be married, we were telling story of a lesbian whose child had been kidnapped and the whole country was rooting for her to get her child back and be a mom. She was relatable and warm and the character has become a beloved character. There’s a case of risk-taking that really was embraced by the audience. Conversely, there were a couple of stories where if had chance to go back and redo them, I’m not sure we’d do them. Somewhere in middle is Zoey/Zarf transgender story we’re telling right now. Part of the audience is passionately approving what we’re doing and there’s a portion that aren’t embracing it with the same excitement. That story was conceived with a finite ending. We wanted to introduce the character and explore the issue and create a relationship with Zoey and Bianca and we’ve had a chance to do that. The storyline will be over by end of April. Megan was somebody who took great risks and was innovative yet at the same time very true to the heart and soul of All My Children. Turning out 250 hours of television a year was a grind and she had been doing it for a while. I’ve actually told her that after she takes a little time off, I would be more than happy to hire her as a story consultant.

-I think Frons is overestimating the popularity of All My Children at the time of the baby switch story. Megan Mctavish taking great risks and was innovative. No she wasn't, I admit she had her good moments but all that she did was write gimmicky storylines and dumb down characters. The Zoe/Zarf storyline was launched at the same time that the horrible serial killer storyline and I think that it killed any chance of Zoe/Zarf to be embraced fully because many people saw it as a way of AMC to get mainstream press to help there sagging ratings. Frons announced that the storyline will be over by the end of April, which means that it didn't work and are cutting their losses, which is sad because I had hope that the storyline would help people understand transgendered issues.

The Best and Worst of 2006

It's almost April but oh well, let's get on with it.

The "Wow what a bitch" award goes to: Lynn Marie Latham for firing Jack Smith, just months after he buried his son, who died of cancer. It would have been much worst if she fired him by text message.

Best Slamming of the TPTB: Julia Barr, rather than take a recurring role, she decided to leave but not before she said what everyone else was thinking.

Worst Recast: Spencer Grammer as Lucy on ATWT. She went from a rebellious, stands up to her father woman to a ho bag who was trying to seduce Dusty five minutes after Jennifer died, it was painful to watch.

Best Guest Casting: B&B, for casting Betty White as Stephanie's mother who was in serious denial about the abuse she suffered by the hands of her father.

Best Return: Laura, GH just watch the videos to see why.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5oz1Bgdgh4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eutEPDRSPvw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpYRtr5aCFk

Worst Return: Dixie, AMC. This was anticipated comeback for AMC's most beloved heroines and what did we get? A Dixie who gave up her daughter and then spent five years pretending to be dead, came back and didn't let her family know that she was alive and well, was trying to get a married man and acting like she was dumb. Cady McClain's talent was wasted.

Best episode: Guiding Light's 70th anniversary special. GL has a lot to be desired but this episode when the whole cast dressed up like the 1930's through 50's for the story about how GL got started. It was well written and acted by all.

Worst Plot: Who killed Greg Madden/Josh is Erica's son. These two are entirely stupid, stupid ideas to begin with. One took too long and when the murderer was finally revealed, Tad Martin, it ruin the character. The other was just a slap on the face of history. For those who don't know, in 1973 Erica decided to get an abortion because she wanted a modeling career not motherhood, this was controversial and groundbreaking at the time. Having the aborted fetus being the one who drugged you and tried to take other your show is just stupid.

Biggest Trend: Shocking plots. Murders, rapes, psychos, killer viruses, sexual violence, evil twins, disasters. Just another day in soapland.

The WTF show: Young and the Restless. Nazis, Carmen Metza, Victor become soft and new agey. Too many lame storylines to count for this award.

The Most Disappointing: ATWT. Lame plots centered around the same people who have few redeemable qualities. Don't forget the Oakdale Slasher while Maddie's secret was just background for the story.

Most Improved: DAYS. After several years of bad writing and acting, it got back to what it did best, supercouples, families and villains. Soap's comfort food show is slowly coming back.

Worst Show: AMC. see worst plot

Best Show: Fashion House. While 2006 saw the beginning for the destruction of AMC and other trying to shock the viewers with lame plots. This all to brief show was the one show that I couldn't what to see day after day. Soaps at its best, there is still hope after all.

Well there you have it. The first Best and Worst. Next time I won't take so long.

Anna Nicole Smith: a real soap opera

I haven't been watching much of soaps these past weeks. It's not because I don't want to, its because I was watching another soap that is more titillating and entertaining than any other soap out there right now and its real. The soap is Anna Nicole Smith, yes the one who died suddenly at the age of 39 under suspicious circumstances. The one who was an easy target for the tabloids and every comic to make fun of. While it is sad that she died young and left a 5 month old baby girl, its a soap opera that even the most inept writers couldn't think of. A woman who was born poor, married at 17, had a baby, was a stripper then was Playboy of the year, a guess jeans model, married again to 89 year old Billionaire who died a year later, fighting for her share of the money, was a spokesperson for a diet pill, had a baby girl and then three days later, her son dies mysteriously, and then Anna Nicole dies herself four months later. If you think that this story is over, its not now there is a fight of who gets to bury her and who is the father of her baby girl, which by the way three men say they are the father of this child and a possibility that there are millions of dollars that are at stake. I don't think that this story is over by a long shot. And don't get me started about Brittney Spears with her going to rehab three times, shaving her head which the hairdresser is selling along with the clippers and the Bic lighter and the red bull can that she was drinking (don't you just love capitalism) and for the big finish, she attacked a paparazzi with an umbrella and a SUV.

Next time I will present the best and worst of 2006, promise.

Extreme Stunts

Well this is February and it means Sweeps. That time of year that shows put on stunts and storylines to wheel the viewers in, and in soaps it's no different. AMC has the Satin Slayer and Zarf/Zoe storyline. GH has a weak attempt to copy 24 with a hostage situation and Alan's heart attack which by the way is sadistic in of itself and the Y&R has the Indiana Jones ripoff that is better done at DAYS. These sweeps are really extreme but for a good reason, ratings. I know I'm supposed to rip them apart for using desperate tactics and I will but with the cancellation of Passions and increasingly low ratings, these shows are becoming desperate for ratings to keep their show on the air. Don't they realize that these stunts are just short-term and the real trick to keep and lure in viewers that will tune in again and again is good writing and good actors? It is the multigenerational dynamic of the families and not just teens that will keep these shows on for years to come. If the writers and the powers that be don't realize that, there won't be a daytime soap anymore.

General Hospital to get a primetime series

According to soapcentral.com, General Hospital is premiering a prime time series called General Hospital: Night Shift. It will be for 13 weeks and will mainly be younger cast with ties to GH's core families. It will premiere on SoapNet later this year.

General Hospital should first do a better job on the daytime show rather that do a night time show but that's just me.

Cady Mcclain, Class Act

WEEKLY: Did AMC really fire you?
McClain: Yes. Dixie's time has come to an end.
WEEKLY: What did they say to you?
McClain: That Dixie was going to die, that it was a creative decision they felt compelled to make, and that Dixie had three weeks to live. If I could have convinced them to decide otherwise, I would have.
WEEKLY: They didn't try to negotiate with you?
McClain: No. But despite their choice to do this, I wish the show every success. It is a wonderful cast of good-hearted actors, and a fantastic and committed production crew.
WEEKLY: Do you think there was anything you could have done to change this?
McClain: I don't think so.
WEEKLY: Would you have agreed to come back last year if you had known this was how it was going to end?
McClain: No. I don't think I ever would have agreed to come back if I had known ahead of time that this was going to be the way things turned out. I feel so grateful for the investment the audience made in these characters over the years, and I wish things were different - for them especially.
WEEKLY: What's your overall feeling about AMC now?
McClain: Despite this sad ending. I look back and recognize that I have been treated incredibly well by ABC. They gave me opportunities that I never would have had if I hadn't returned.[She explains like what...]
WEEKLY: Do you have a favorite storyline?
McClain: I am not sure there was one, but I can say that my favorite thing and the BEST thing in all my years were the moments of quality with Michael Knight when we had our "dynamic" going on. When our timing was beyond sweet, the chemistry was sparkling, and the work was exciting and fun. That gives me a sense of pride. It was something I fought for, and I am glad we had those moments.[What ending would you have written for Dixie? she makes a shoe comment to answer...Who will you keep in touch with?]
WEEKLY: Anything you want to say to the execs?
McClain: [She thanks Frons and Carruthers for the blog, long]... So I thank Brian and Julie for that opportunity.
WEEKLY: I feel a "but" coming...
McClain [laughs]: You're right. How can I say this?
WEEKLY: Honestly.
McClain: Although I really enjoyed working with Julie, and I feel she is one of the kindest producers I have ever worked with, I want it to be clear that there was no negotiation of any kind. This was not a financial situation that I turned down. I was told the way things were going to be. Very kindly, but absolutely.
WEEKLY: Does this leave a bad taste in your mouth about daytime in general?...
McClain: No...I embrace the change and the opportunity inherent in that change. I believe in the medium of daytime TV, and it's lasting ability to tell enlightening and touching stories with a focus on women's issues. I honestly think it's possible for soaps to continue generation after generation.[She discusses her plans, her gigs]
WEEKLY: Any last words?
McClain: I sincerely and deeply hope that All My Children will be around for my children to be entertained and guided by, just as I was as a little girl with my Mom by my side. And I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a small part of its long tradition

How Classy is that? Cady could have bashed the Powers that Be and for good reason, but she didn't. This is just another example of the show not listening to the fans and doing their own thing. The ratings for AMC says it all, downhill.

News, News and more News

Hello everyone. There has been a lot goings ons lately so first things first, Passions is cancelled, yes after eight years, Passions is no more. Even though I rarely watched the show, its sad to see another soap get canned. Cady McClain, who just back on AMC last year is exiting out. Maybe its because they destroyed Dixie, or maybe its because she criticized the top brass about how they treated Julia Barr and actresses in her age range? I know that for me, I'm going to watch a lot less AMC.

A Soap Star's passing

Darlene Conley, who played Sally Spectra on the Bold and The Beautiful since its premiere in 1988, has died of cancer. She was 72 years old. In November 2006, she announced that she was diagnosed with Stomach cancer and underwent immediate surgery and chemotherapy, back then the diagnosis was to be pretty good but she lost the fight. My deepest condolences with her family, friends and the cast and crew of the Bold and The Beautiful.

The Young and the Restless

I like Y&R a lot, really its basically one of the few soaps that doesn't have to rely on gimmicky plots and actually uses its veteran cast. Until now, just in the last week alone, we had history re-writes, baby switches and Sheila who looks like Phylis. What-in-the-hell happened to the show that was once above all the rest of the soaps? Even at its worst, it was at least watchable now it is becoming a hot mess. I hope that they get their act together soon before they destroy their legacy like All My Children is doing.

Back off of Oprah, Bitches

I know that this blog is about soaps and it is, but it is about other stuff too, stuff that I care about like the issue of Oprah building a school for disadvantage girls in South Africa. I know that some people say that Oprah should be doing more for education here in America instead in another country. Others say that the school, which cost 40 million dollars to build and includes a hair salon, a yoga studio and a theatre is to extravagant for a poor country. I say, shut your mouth and just congratulate Oprah for doing something good for a country that is trying to rebuild itself after apartheid. I know that we have to fix our public school system, we have problems but in Africa, the children have nothing and when I say nothing I mean NOTHING. They don't know if they are going to eat today much less go to school which they have to pay to go. What Oprah is doing should be commended and should be an example for people to do more to help those who are less fortunate.

For the critics that say that it was too extravagant for a poor country, It's Oprah's money and she can do with it as she pleases. Oprah does a lot for America, hell she did more for the victims of Katrina than the government did, why more and I bet that she does for a lot of people but its not televise. Just back off of Oprah who is doing more to change the world for the better than anyone right now.
